The durian season starts in June and lasts till August. Throughout the year, the fruit remains popular among Singaporeans despite its seasonal availability.
A single fruit costs as much as $40 off season. This price falls to around $20 during the season.
Locals enjoy buying durians from roadside fruit stalls. At these stalls, shopkeepers display the durians and allow customers to pick and choose.
Shopkeepers wear gloves to protect their hands while handling the fruits They use blunt handled knives to cut the fruits open.
Customers can choose to eat the durians they have bought at the stall or bring it home. If customers choose to bring the durians home, shopkeepers will pack the durians in styrofoam boxes and wrap these boxes in cling wrap to ensure the smell does not escape.
The different varieties of durians have a myriad of nicknames. Examples of these names include Red Prawn, Cat Mountain King, XO and D24.
Some of these names, like Red Prawn, describe the look of the durian. Some others, like XO, describe the taste. While some are related to their country of origin.
Singapore has very few durian plantations. Most of the durians sold in Singapore are imported from neighbouring countries like Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand.
